THE benefit of playing reserve team games shone through at the New Lawn this afternoon, as deadball specialist Wes Baynes followed up his double against Rochdale on Wednesday, with another duble salvo to down the luckless Rovers.

It was here last season that manager Dean Saunders began his Wrexham reign and thistime aroud he was not afraid to ring the changes following the midweek defeat at Tamworth. All five substitutes on the night come in frm the start to join the previously injured Hedi Taboubi.

Frank Sinclair made his debut for the Reds, after a 90 minute run out with the reserves on Wednesday and two-goal hero Wes Baynes was played alongside the returning Marc Williams in a 3-5-2 formation.

Wrexham seemed to struggle early on with their new formation and a couple of wayward passes along the back line were putting the team under pressure, when they could easily have been played away through other channels.

Then on eight minutes Rovers keeper Terry Burton raced toward his left hand corner flag to stop a ball going out of play, but only then realised that he was being marked by two red shirts. He was fortunate that his attempted clearance only came back off an attacker and played Marc Williams offside when the goal was begging!

Rovers won a free kick on the right side of the Wrexham box on 14 minutes, the cross was headed away by Mani, but only as far as Jon Challinor some 20-yards out, who fired in a dipping shot that wasn't far over Chris Maxwell's cross bar.

Shortly aftweards a Wrexham corner was played short before being worked to Frank Sinclair and from the edge of the Rovers box his shot had Burton scrambling away to his left to push the ball away from danger.

More good work by Paul Stonehouse on the home left flank set up a cross for Challinor, but once again, his effort from outside the area failed to hit its intended target.

A late flag for a foul against the Dragons infuriated the visiting players and Taboubi had his named taken for kicking the ball away. The free kick was delivered into the middle of the goal and it took three attempts to finally get the ball hacked down field.

Wrexham did have the ball in the net on 25 minutes, when Marc Williams volleyed home a great sweeping cross from Baynes, but all in vain as the assistant's flag was raised for offside.

The breakthrough came on 29 minutes, when a 25-yard free kick to Wrexham was struck home as Wes Bayneshammered home one of his trademark long-distance efforts.

This followed up his two spectacular strikes against Rochdale Reserves in midweek, and once again the keeper was struggling to get across his goal to stop the effort from finding the back of the net.

The striker followed up this goal with another just three minutes later, this time from open play as Mark Jones passed through to Marc Williams and then onto the speeding Wes Baynes, who took the ball in his stride before firing a low effort under the advancing Burton.

Jones took a knock for his troubles and had to leave the field for further attention before returning.

With their tails up, Baynes tried his luck from another set piece, this time out wide on the touchline, his looping strike had pace and only passed Burton's back post by a narrow margin.

Rovers were at sixes and sevens, and Baynes was only inches away from a back pass that he anticipated, which would have left him with the goal at his mercy.

The half time whistle will have come as sweet relief for the home side, yet it could have been all so different had luck been on their side!

Ht 0-2

The confidence was high for the visitors at the start of the second half, as shown by Curtis Obeng, who raced from the half way line, outpaced his marker into the box, but was unlucky to be closed down just as he tried to slide in a pass for the Marc Williams running through the middle.

Twice in a minute Wrexham got the ball into the Rovers net, but twice their efforts were ruled out.

The first was when Taboubi split the defence to find Marc Williams, but the offside flag went up. Then from a free kick, Williams once again forced the ball over the line, this time in a melee, but the referee ruled it had hit the hand of Assoumani in the build-up.

With Forest Green having to stretch themselves in an attempt to get a foothold back into the match, Williams and Baynes were constantly looking ot take advantage.

Then Rovers wasted a great chance to do just that, when a cross field ball picked out the unmarked Curtis McDonald, but the winger was unable to direct his chance on target and instead was left holding his head in his hands.

Williams once again broke away on the right, Baynes finding him, but the Wales U21 seemed to be caught in two minds when coming in on goal at an angle, only firing straight at Burton.

Conal Platt's attempt to replicate Baynes' first half free kick was not a successful on 72 minutes, as Maxwell organised his wall well and pluck the effort out from under his crossbar.

Marc Williams did well on the left, created space from himself before trying to curl an effort inside the far post, but it strayed a yard wide instead.

After the home side had made two changes, Saunders sent on Adrian Cieslewicz for Marc Williams on 74 minutes, with Christian Smith going him for Taboubi two minutes later..

Baynes was so unlucky not to claim his hat-trick on 85 minutes, when his shot was blocked in the six-yard area, the ball ran out to Cieslewicz, whose goal bound effort was actually blocked by Mark Jones - amazingly enough the referee awarded a corner, with Jones left writhing on the ground at the power of the Pole's shot!

It was Baynes who took the corner and although Mani rose to meet the cross, the ball flicked off his head and carried on for a goal kick.

Rovers kept plugging away, but even when they got into a decent position the final ball rarely threatened Maxwell. Until deep into injury when the young keeper produced a fanatastic diving save to maintain his cleansheet.

Against a side with five staright defeats to their 'credit' this season, this was seen as a must win game for the Dragons and they did exactly that. It could havebeen different, but the visitors made their own luck and deserved the points.

Tamworth 2 Wrexham FC 1:

Dean Saunders' side in third defeatAug 25 2009 By Mark Currie, Daily Post

WREXHAM FC crashed to their third defeat of the season at Tamworth on Tuesday night as the Blue Square Premier newcomers deservedly extended their unbeaten start to the campaign with a first victory.
The Dragons’ travelling support of nearly 600 fans comprised almost 50% of the official attendance at The Lamb, but they trailed away distinctly unimpressed at the end of another lack-lustre performance from Dean Saunders’ side, who failed to build on a Gareth Taylor goal that put them ahead and were once again second best in virtually every phase of the game.
They took to the field showing four changes from the side beaten 2-1 at the Racecourse on Saturday.Goalkeeper Chris Maxwell stepped in for the injured Sam Russell, Andy Fleming replaced Frenchman Hedi Taboubi, who picked up a thigh strain against Kettering Town, and Adrian Cieslewicz was given a striking role in the absence of Matty Wolfenden, who was an another weekend casualty with an ankle injury. The only unforced change brought a first start of the season for skipper Ashley Westwood at the heart of defence, Mike Williams moving to left-back at the expense of Sam Williamson.
By way of contract, the home side kept faith with the side that drew 0-0 with Cambridge United in their previous outing. And the Lambs made a confident start, Richard Tait’s long ball finding Jake Sheridan, whose turn inside Westwood was much better than the off target effort that followed. Wrexham should have scored in their first real thrust on eight minutes when Gareth Taylor’s flick-on put Cieslewicz into space, but the youngster probably had too much to time to think about his shot which he dragged wide. The end-to-end action continued with Maxwell being called upon for the first time, the Wales under-21 international blocking a near-post flick from Alex Rodman following good work on the left flank by Nick Wright. The Dragons then had a debatable penalty shout turned down when Tamworth skipper Chris Smith took the full force of a Mark Jones shot, but they went ahead, slightly against the run of play it has to be said, with a finely-worked goal on 26 minutes.Tidying up at the back, Westwood’s pass encouraged Mike Williams to advance and he in turn quickly fed Jones, giving the midfielder time to spot a timely run from Taylor that the veteran striker rounded off with his fourth of the season.Four minutes later the home side were exceedingly fortunate not to concede a penalty when Cieslewicz was taken by Tait from behind, but the well-placed referee waved away the claim and the let-off kept the home side in the game.Tamworth took full advantage and upped the tempo to such a pitch that they were back on level terms eight minutes before the break. The pacy Rodman eluded Mike Williams to force Maxwell into another save at the expense of a corner and from Wright’s flag kick, captain Smith rose at the far post to head home the equaliser. And a lazy clearance by Westwood could have proved costly in the 43rd minute when Rodman again threatened in a solo run that ended when he knocked the ball too far ahead, allowing Maxwell to gather.Tamworth maintained the pressure into the second period, forcing the Dragons to defend a series of corners and free kicks, and Rodman was not far away from converting a Wright cross in the 52nd minute.
The visitors were clearly rattled by the pace and ferocity of their opponents and were finding it difficult to get beyond the halfway line, but Fleming eventually got his foot on the ball and raised the siege. He found Williams on the left and the defender’s cross was not only missed by goalkeeper Danny Alcock, but Taylor and Silvio Spann as well.Williams then made way for Neil Taylor in a somewhat surprising change by the Dragons boss on the hour, just as there were signs that the home side’s efforts were beginning to take their toll. But Wrexham showed little inclination to apply some pressure of their own, too often squandering possession, and they were eventually punished when Jake Sheridan muscled his way past Westwood in the 71st minute to beat Maxwell with ease.Four minutes later Marc Williams replaced Smith, his first touch a powerful header over the bar from Spann’s corner as the visitors desperately looked for a way back. And the substitute came closest to earning a share of the spoils with a low shot four minutes from time that produced the only meaningful save of the evening from Alcock.

Wrexham Sign Ex- Chelsea Defender Frank Sinclair

Ex-Chelsea defender Frank Sinclair has signed for Wrexham and will make his debut Tuesday night Aug 25th 2009 at Tamworth. Sinclair spent 8 years at Chelsea and was known for being a no nonsense centre half which is what Wrexham definitely need at the moment.
He is a big lad who is not afraid to get stuck in and this will upset a few opponents which is what we don`t do at the moment. Instead of getting bullied we are now going to bully other teams and I think he will be a great addition to the squad. We have lacked this type of no-nonsense hard hitting player for a long time and our defence just fades when up against a big team but Sinclair hopefully will now change this.

Frank Sinclair

Club Career

Chelsea

Sinclair started his club career with Chelsea, joining as an apprentice in April 1988 and turning professional in May 1990.[1] He had a short loan spell at West Bromwich Albion in the middle of the 1991–92 season. He impressed on his Albion debut, which came in a 1–1 draw away atBradford City on 14 December 1991, but was sent off in his second match for the club two weeks later in another 1–1, this time at Exeter City, when he was involved in a clash of heads with thereferee and later received a hefty fine.[1]

Sinclair returned to Chelsea before the end of the 1991-92 season and two years later played in theFA Cup final against Manchester United, but his foul on Andrei Kanchelskis in the second half saw him give away a penalty which was scored by Eric Cantona to force a 2-0 lead for United, and Chelsea went on to lose the game 4-0.

However, Sinclair still had an opportunity to play in European competition the following season, and helped Chelsea reach the semi-finals of the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup (they were able to compete in this competition as United had qualified for the European Cup as Premier League champions). He also helped them reach the FA Cup semi-final the following season.

He was an FA Cup winner with Chelsea as they beat Middlesbrough 2–0 in the 1997 final. The following season, Sinclair scored for Chelsea in the League Cup Final, again over Middlesbrough, in a 2-0 win, but his first team chances were starting to become limited as new manager Gianluca Vialli built a new team which consisted mostly of continental stars. He was not in the squad that won the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup that season.

Leicester City

He moved on to Leicester City in August 1998, for a fee of £2,000,000. He was part of the team that won the 2000 League Cup, beating Tranmere Rovers 2–1 at Wembley. During his time with Leicester, Sinclair developed an unfortunate reputation for scoring own goals.[2] This was caused initially by two own goals in consecutive weekends in 1999. The first was a great leap at Highburyto give Arsenal a 2-1 win. He managed to refrain from putting through his own net against Coventrythe following Wednesday, but then scored another at home to former club Chelsea, where he beatTore André Flo to the ball to smash it into his own net and lose Leicester their one goal lead. The importance of these goals was accentuated by the fact that both came in the last minute of the match, and both caused Leicester to drop points.

Sinclair was fined two weeks wages by Leicester in September 2001 for his part in an incident at a Heathrow hotel. Sinclair, along with four Chelsea players, had gone on a five-hour drinking binge and had stripped off, swore and vomited in front of American tourists.[3]

In 2002, Sinclair scored the most bizarre of his own goals. After 3 minutes into a game at Middlesbrough, he slotted the ball past keeper Ian Walker in a seemingly laid-back situation.[4] This resulted in a 1-0 defeat for Leicester. This own goal against Middlesbrough was not to be his last for the club.[5] In March 2004, Sinclair and his Leicester City teammates, Paul Dickov and Keith Gillespie were arrested in Spain over sexual assault charges, while on a training holiday.[6] The charges were later dropped.[7] Leicester released Sinclair at the end of the 2003–2004 season.

Burnley

In June 2004, Sinclair signed for Burnley on a free transfer.[8] He became an astute Bosman ruling transfer signing for the Clarets, and made numerous appearances across the defence, impressing throughout both the 2004–05 and 2005–06 campaigns. This culminated in his appointment as club captain, a role he seemed to relish but of which he was relieved for the 2006–07 season in favour of Wayne Thomas. He scored his first Burnley goal in a 2-1 home win againstRotherham United on 12 March 2005

Huddersfield Town

On 8 February 2007, he moved to Huddersfield Town on an emergency loan deal. On 24 March, he was sent off against Brighton & Hove Albion in a match which finished 0-0. Upon his return to Burnley, he was released on a free transfer. Sinclair signed a one year contract at Huddersfield Town on 14 May.[9] He cited manager Andy Ritchie as a reason for staying on: "he's been successful in League One before", he told HTAFC.com. On 6 October 2007, he received his second red card of his short career at the Galpharm Stadium, in Town's 4-0 drubbing at the hands of Walsall at the Bescot Stadium. He received his third during Town's 4-1 defeat by Southend United at Roots Hall on 5 December 2007. Huddersfield released Sinclair at the end of his contract in May 2008

Lincoln City

Sinclair signed a one year contract for Football League Two side Lincoln City on 1 July 2008, reuniting with manager Peter Jackson who originally brought him toHuddersfield Town.[11] Jackson hailed Sinclair's "determination, his personality and his will to win", and said that both Wycombe Wanderers and Brighton & Hove Albion were interested in signing the player.[12] In March 2009, Sinclair made the surprise move to Wycombe Wanderers on loan from Lincoln City. His presence helped Wycombe to achieve promotion from League Two. In May 2009, he was one of seven players released [13] by Lincoln City

Wrexham

Both Wycombe and Bury had expressed an interest in signing Sinclair for the 2009–10 season,[14] but he eventually signed a one year deal with Wrexham

Dean Saunders Transfers

Dean Saunders Transfers since becoming Wrexham manager in October 2008

Monday 8th Jun 2009

Kyle Is Latest To Leave

DEFENDER Kyle Critchell has agreed a deal which will see him leave the club with immediate effect, despite having a season left on his current contract, the necessary paperwork will be completed shortly.

The 22-year-old Wales U21 international had progressed through the youth and reserve teams at Southampton and also enjoyed a loan spell with Torquay United.

He left for Chesterfield in 2007 and was released by them after half a season, when he moved to Weymouth, his hometown club.

A move to Wrexham followed last summer, but he was suspended for the first three games of the season (following a red card in his final match with Weymouth) and then picked up an injury in training at the end of August.

After recovering from this ankle problem four months later, he said he was looking to be loaned out to help improve his first team chances at Wrexham. Joining fellow Conference side York City on a month's loan in early January 2009.

He was due to make his debut a day later against former club Weymouth, but the match was postponed due to the bad weather, before eventually made his first appearance after playing in the 2-1 victory over Oxford United ten days later.

His loan was extended for a second month on 4 February and finished with him making 11 appearances for the Minstermen.

Coming back to Wrexham in early March, Kyle then rejoined his local side Weymouth on loan until the end of the season. Playing eight times while with Weymouth, one bright spot as the Terras were relegated to the Conference South.

In total, Kyle only played two games for the Dragons, both last August.

He leaves with our best wishes and we hope he will soon be settled with a new club.

Tuesday 4th June 2009

Nat Brown has revealed he wants to leave the club so he can get first team football and not just sit and languish in the reserves. Personally I don`t think Matt has had much of a look in at Wrexham and maybe if he had had a decent look in then he would have made the centre back position his own as every time I saw him play, he always played quite a decent game so not sure if I am glad he is leaving or gutted. It`s one of them.

Tuesday 4th June 2009

Mark has signed a 12 month contract with a clause in it, which states that if after 4 months he has not done enough then Wrexham can tear up his contract and send Mark on his way.

Tuesday 19th May 2009

Levi Macken & Shaun Walley have both been released by Wrexham manager Dean Saunders. Both of them spent most of last season on loan at York City and Southport respectively but have been told they are no longer required at Wrexham. I am glad to see them both go as I thought both of them were uselesss footballers and have been very fortunate to be given a chance to play football for a living. If I was them I suggest they start looking for a proper job because they never going to make a decent living out of football as they are not good enough.

14th May 2009

Nathan Fairhurst joins Wrexham full time.

MIDFIELD player Nathan Fairhurst believes he has made the right choice by joining Wrexham, rather than staying with Championship club Preston North End.

The 19-year-old says the opportunity to play regular first team football with the Dragons is a better option rather than sit on the bench or play reserve team football at Preston where he was offered a new contract. I wish Nathan all the best and am sure that if he has a successful season then there will be a host of clubs trying to get his signature as he is too good to be playing non league football for more than a season.

Tuesday 5th May 2009

Jefferson Louis has left Wrexham by mutual consent with a year still left on his contract. The laziest footballer I have ever had the misfortune to watch play for Wrexham

Wednesday 29th April 2009

Gavin Ward - Keeper near the end of his career who served us well for 2 years.

Christian Gyan - The only match I seen him play, he was subbed at half time as he was shocking.

Anthony Williams - People claim he kept Wrexham in the league the season they beat Boston on the last day but he played about 12 games after coming in on loan and he was very lucky as all the shots in those 12 games came at a decent height and mae him look a better keeper than he was. Useless and good riddance.

Chris Marriott - Never saw him play.

Simon Spender - The promise he had as a youngster was never seen and was not good enough for Wrexham. Only reason he got a run in the team because Brian Little and Brian Carey don`t have a clue about playing football the proper way and thought he was the answer to someone with a bit of skill taking on players.

Wrexham manager Dean Saunders yesterday strengthened his promotion-chasing squad by signing winger Jamie McCluskey and he is actively pursuing yet more targets to keep his players fresh for the final 10 weeks of the season.

Saunders said new boy McCluskey faced a battle for selection, but predicted he would quickly become a crowd-pleaser at the Racecourse.

"Jamie has joined us until the end of the season and if he does well we will give him a new deal next season.

"He has not played for a long time but the fans will love watching him. He is a very talented young player, but his first job is to force his way into the team. Once he has done that I’m sure he will become a crowd favourite."

McCluskey, at one time the youngest ever player to feature in the Scottish Premier League when at Hibernian, hopes his move to the Racecourse will finally launch a career blighted by injury. A twice-broken foot was at the root of the problem, but the 21-year old Scot is optimistic that the worst is behind him.

"I have only been here a week and a half and I’ve only trained with the other lads for three days," he said.

"This is a big opportunity for me to get back to playing regular football and I owe that to the manager and his staff who have all been great with me. I have been to Partizan Belgrade in Serbia and Catania in Italy, but I have not played for a year.

"Wrexham are obviously doing well, but I would not have signed for them unless I felt I had something to offer and I’ll be doing my best to break into the first team as quickly as possible."

17th February Andrew Crofts signs on as a Wrexham player Andrew Crofts

Wrexham FC sign Andrew Crofts

DEAN SAUNDERS has lured Wales star Andrew Crofts to the Racecourse – but the midfielder couldn’t prevent Wrexham slipping to a 2-1 defeat at Burton Albion last night.

Crofts, who has 12 international caps, made his debut in the Pirelli Stadium loss after completing a whirlwind loan switch from League Two side Gillingham hours before the game.

The signing provided Saunders some consolation after watching his side throw away a 1-0 advantage against the league leaders, with Jefferson Louis opening the scoring on 23 minutes.

And the manager believes Crofts has a glittering career ahead of him, having watched the midfielder at close quarters while on international duty with Wales.

In dispute with his club Gillingham, where his contract expires at the end of the season, the 24-year old has joined the Dragons until the end of the season in order to play regular first team football.

And the Racecourse boss is delighted to have secured the player’s services for Wrexham’s bid to bounce back into the Football League at the first attempt.

“He’s coming to help us in this final push for promotion,” said Saunders.

“I know his qualities from working with him at Wales and this boy could end up playing in the Premiership. He played against Holland last summer, where he made a good impression on the coaching staff.

“This is a major coup for us and shows the ambition of the chairman and myself in trying get Wrexham promoted out of this league.

“Andrew’s presence brings experience and strength to the squad and he will bring the best out of our younger players. He is a good, solid character and certainly no fancy-dan player because he rolls his sleeves up and gets stuck in.

“Andrew will definitely move onto better things. But it shows the boy’s character that he is will to come and help a Welsh club in the short term. He really is doing us a big favour.

“Both John Toshack and myself advised the player that a move to Wrexham would be a big help to both him and Welsh football.”

Crofts has also won under 19 and under 21 honours and was Gillingham’s player of the year last season. He made nearly 200 appearances for the Kent club, scoring 17 goals.

Wrexham have been busy in the transfer market again, albeit only on loan. A new goalkeeper which we need and another central defender which we definitely don`t need. A striker is what we desperately require but can`t seem to get one. Wrexham are in line to parade a new goalkeeper at Histon after International clearance was given to Gunnar Nielsen. The 22year old stopper has been signed until the end of the season from Manchester City, Gunnar is the third player Wrexham have acquired from City this season, following in the steps of Angelos Tsiaklis and Sam Williamson. The 6'3" stopper began his career with HB Torshavn, before moving to BK Frem Copenhagen in 2005. After making five Appearances, Gunnar was signed by Premier League Blackburn Rovers in July 2007 for an undisclosed fee. While at Rovers, he had a six month loan spell with Scottish Premier League outfit Motherwell, before moving onto Manchester City in a two and a half year deal. Obviously Mark hughes must rate him highly to bring him to Man City from Blackburn seeing as Man City already have two excellent goalkeepers. At 6 foot 3 he should be able to handle anything in the air which is what we desperately need. How many times have we lost to set pieces is un-real so hopefully this should put a stop to that. Assoumani signs for DragonsWrexham have announced the signing of defender Mansour Assoumani for the remainder of the season.Mansour is 28,and was born in Nice, France. He is 6 feet 2 inches and can play in central defence or right back. Assoumani began his career with French club Montpellier, making 74 appearances and scoring 4 goals in a five year stay. He has also played for German second division clubs Saarbrucken and Sportfreunde Siegen. In December 2008, Assoumani was offered a one month contract with First division Leeds United. He made one appearance while at Elland road, Playing in the 3-1 defeat against Milton Keynes Dons.Mansour was released by Leeds in January 2009, and trained with Crewe Alexandra but failed to secure a contract. At last we have some real height in our defence which is what we desperately required. I have now lost count of the number of players we have signed permanently or got on loan in the last two years. Surely we must be talking over 50 players. Geoff Moss surely must be congratulated on the money he has spent since taking over at Wrexham or sent to the nearest mental institution and strapped to the chair for his own well being and mental health because let`s face it, who else would have ploughed the amount of money into Wrexham during the last year or so. We must have had more players than Pamela Anderson has had ,well you know what she has had.

DRAGONS SIGN FRENCH DEFENDER06/02/2009French central defender Aurelien Collin, who played nineteen matches for Scottish League side Gretna last season, has signed for Blue Square Premier club Wrexham until the end of the season. Collin (pictured) joined Gretna from Spanish La Liga club Mallorca in August 2007, signing a two-year contract with the club, but he only made 19 appearances before he was released by the then-SPL club before the end of last season. Trials at Championship clubs Blackpool, Preston North End and Wolves failed to lead to a permanent deal being offered, and Collin signed a one-year contract at Greek Premier League side Panserraikos. "He's played at a higher level, he's aggressive and he's another centre half," said Wrexham manager Dean Saunders, who saw defenders Steve Evans and Shaun Pejic leave the club my mutual consent this week.
