Wrexham 2-1 Mansfield

Wrexham won their first ever FA Trophy game as Dean Saunders' men struck early to beat fellow relegation victims Mansfield Town at the Racecourse.

Teenage striker Jon Brown, on loan from Cardiff City, opened the scoring as early as the third minute.

Defender Ashley Westwood added a second with an 11th minute header for Wrexham.

Marc Williams hit the woodwork for Wrexham before Adam O'Connor scored a 67th minute consolation for their Blue Square Premier rivals Mansfield.

Wrexham 2 Mansfield Town 1: Match report

Mansfield bowed out of the FA Trophy at the first hurdle despite a spirited second half fightback where they might have nicked a draw.

The Stags, under the temporary charge of senior players Mark Stallard and Adie Moses following Billy McEwan's departre, looked dead and buried when they were 2-0 after just 11 minutes..

But they rode their luck in the rest of the first half and then looked much more of a threat after the restart.

Aaron O'Connor pulled one goal back midway through the half but there was no equaliser as the hosts, so dominant early on, held firm.

The opener came inside three minutes in what was the first serious attack of the game by either side.

Marc Williams broke free on the left byline and pulled the ball back for Jon Brown, who had the simplest of tap-ins from close range.

In the 11th minute, a superb stop from Jamie Annerson saw him claw away a Marc Williams header that was heading for the left-hand corner

But it was 2-0 from the resulting flag kick as Nathan Woolfe's near post kick was headed goalwards by Ashley Westwood and seemed to go in off a Mansfield body on the line.

With Wrexham rampant, Woolfe's cross was only inches too far for two Red Dragons making late runs into the box.

Midway through the half, James Kay's excellent cross was missed by the head Aaron O'Connor at close quarters, but the striker was flagged offside anyway.

The hosts went close to 3-0 when the lively Marc Williams escaped down the right and crossed for Andy Fleming whose low finish was crucially blocked by Silk.

Mansfield had two good situations within the space of 30 seconds as first Nathan Arnold lost control of the ball when he could have gone clear before Jonathan D'Laryea's through ball was just inches too far for Sinclair.

But Wrexham were always dangerous and Brown thundered just centimetres wide of the right-hand post from the edge of the box.

Just before the break, Brown find space on the left and crossed low for Patrick Suffo whose attempted finish was well blocked by Alan O'Hare.

In the final minute, Silk found space to cross for D'Laryea who headed straight at Ward before O'Connor curled well off target.

At the start of the second period, Marc Williams caught a sight of goal but spooned his effort well wide.

The Stags won a free-kick that was cleared only as far as O'Connor, whose volley sped past the left-hand post.

Kay then thumped well wide from distance before Neil Taylor got in an important header to deny Alex Jeannin from Arnold's centre.

Wrexham's response saw Mike Williams bring a smart save out of Annerson from Brown's left-wing free-kick.

Just before the hour, Adnan Ahmed came on to replace Matt Somner in midfield.

Jeannin had acres of space to run into as Wrexham were caught on the break, only to fire high over the top from 25 yards.

In the 67th minute, Marc Williams' tenacity allowed him to tee up substitute Sam Aiston, whose drive was high and wide.

Mansfield gave themselves hope soon after when they pulled a goal back. Kay's deep cross was pulled back by Sinclair allowing O'Connor to side-foot home a simple finish from eight yards.

That seemed to inject some confidence into the Stags and only a last-ditch tackle from Westwood prevented substitute Michael Blackwood – on for Jeannin – for having a glorious chance to level.

Ward then made a fine diving stop to deny O'Connor after Hurren's accurate through pass had set him up..

But Wrexham almost wrapped the game up in their next foray forward as Marc Williams struck the right-hand post trying to bend the ball into the corner from the edge of the box.

Sinclair was left holding his head in his hands when he overran the ball after being sent clear by a slide-rule pass from Ahmed.

With the game now spread, the opportunities were coming thick and fast at both ends and Aiston's centre only just cleared a Wrexham head when a touch would almost certainly brought a goal.

A sharp turn by Sinclair saw him get away down the right but O'Connor could only turn his hard and low cross over the bar.

With time running out, Kay won the ball in an advanced position but dragged his 20-yard drive well wide.

At the other end, Brown struck the outside of the right-hand post from a tight angle after winning a foot race with Kay.

The referee added four minutes of stoppage time but Mansfield were unable to fashion a clear opening.

Mansfield: Annerson, Silk, O'Hare, Hurren, Kay, Arnold, D'Laryea, Somner, Jeannin, Sinclair, O'Connor. Subs: Gamble, Blackwood, Ahmed, Trimmer, Kitchen.

Wrexham: Ward, Taylor, Mike Williams, Westwood, Williamson, J. Brown, Fleming, Fairhurst, Woolfe, Marc Williams, Suffo. Subs: Kearney, Aiston, Smith, Tsiaklis, Abbott.

Referee: A. Halliday.

Wrexham manager Dean Saunders said:
"It was our game to lose in the end.

"They weren't peppering our goal but if the ball bounced their way, they might have equalised.

"I lost count of how many goals we could have scored. We were in situation where the ball has got to go in.

"And they seemed to gain confidence from our misses, they showed a bit of fight and scored a good goal.

"I wasn't happy with the second half and I'd like to teach them about how to win a football match."

Mansfield joint caretaker-manager Mark Stallard:
"I was pleased of the response to the lads because in the first 15 minutes we gave away two sloppy goals and didn't look at it.

"We dug deep, fought and played with a bit of freedom as we took the shackles off and expressed ourselves, especially in the second-half.

"We looked dangerous and with a bit more confidence and getting our injured players, there's a bit of brightness on the horizon."

Wrexham v Southport Highlights

Highlights will be on here before 4pm today Wednesday 10th December 2008 of our match against Southport last night in The Setanta Shield.

In a much changed team from our last leaguematch Dean Saunders decides to give some of the reserve players a chance to impress but unfortunately this was not the case.

Wrexham dominated the opening 45 minutes and Marc Williams scored around 8 minutes before half time with a well taken goal, which he took round the keeper and slotted home but we should have been 3-4 goals to the good with the amount of possession we had. Steve Evans getting a rare run out as was Anthony Williams in goal but don`t bank on seeing these two again in a Wrexham shirt this season after a disastrous 2nd half and extra time performance.

Brown up front for us was a class apart from everyone else and he eased past players as if they weren`t there as I thought his performance was outstanding and he is in my opinion destined for a good future in the game.

The 2nd half kicks off and on the hour mark Steve Evans brought their lad down in the box and was shown a straight red and they equalised from the penalty. From this moment onwards Southport tore us apart and at times we couldn`t get anywhere near the ball and it was embarrasing to watch. It was like Brian Little was back in charge, then I realised that most of the players on show tonight were regulars under Little and it brought back bad memories as we were awful.Ten minutes before the end of 90 minutes a red card was shown to Williamson for a challenge which was not worthy of even a yellow card, never mind a red and the referee knew he had made a mistake when a few minutes later he sent off a Southport player for challenging for a ball and he obviously did this to amend for his red card a few minutes earlier as the both of them were never red cards in a million years. It was now 9 against 10 players and off into extra time we go on a freezing night at The Racecourse. A howler from Anthony Williams from a cross gifted Sotuhport their 2nd goal and didn`t the fans let him know. They were shouting for Gavin Ward and singing that Williams will never play for Wrexham again and he was very shaky after this and every backpass it was 50/50 whether he would make a mess of it. At one stage he gave an evil stare to sections of the crowd who were slagging him off and this did him no favours at all. Wrexham hit the bar in the 2nd half of injury time but they deserved exactly what they got and that was nothing.

Come back for highlights of the goals and the red cards.

Nat Stays On With Silkmen

BOTH clubs have agreed to extend the loan spell of Nat Brown with League 2 side Macclesfield Town for another month.

The tall centre half has played in seven games during his first four weeks at Moss Rose and weighed in with three goals in three games to help the Macc lads to a draw and two wins.

He has also played in two FA Cup victories away to Harlow and Port Vales, with them now facing Everton in the third round.

The ex-Lincoln City defender still lives in Sheffield and the daily commute to Macclesfield is only about half that of travelling to North Wales.

This comes only a few days after Darran Kempson agreed to a second month with Forest Green Rovers, while Simon Brown is just settling into his stay with Rushden & Diamonds.

Dean Saunders Transfers

Dean Saunders Transfers since becoming Wrexham manager in October 2008

Monday 8th Jun 2009

Kyle Is Latest To Leave

DEFENDER Kyle Critchell has agreed a deal which will see him leave the club with immediate effect, despite having a season left on his current contract, the necessary paperwork will be completed shortly.

The 22-year-old Wales U21 international had progressed through the youth and reserve teams at Southampton and also enjoyed a loan spell with Torquay United.

He left for Chesterfield in 2007 and was released by them after half a season, when he moved to Weymouth, his hometown club.

A move to Wrexham followed last summer, but he was suspended for the first three games of the season (following a red card in his final match with Weymouth) and then picked up an injury in training at the end of August.

After recovering from this ankle problem four months later, he said he was looking to be loaned out to help improve his first team chances at Wrexham. Joining fellow Conference side York City on a month's loan in early January 2009.

He was due to make his debut a day later against former club Weymouth, but the match was postponed due to the bad weather, before eventually made his first appearance after playing in the 2-1 victory over Oxford United ten days later.

His loan was extended for a second month on 4 February and finished with him making 11 appearances for the Minstermen.

Coming back to Wrexham in early March, Kyle then rejoined his local side Weymouth on loan until the end of the season. Playing eight times while with Weymouth, one bright spot as the Terras were relegated to the Conference South.

In total, Kyle only played two games for the Dragons, both last August.

He leaves with our best wishes and we hope he will soon be settled with a new club.

Tuesday 4th June 2009

Nat Brown has revealed he wants to leave the club so he can get first team football and not just sit and languish in the reserves. Personally I don`t think Matt has had much of a look in at Wrexham and maybe if he had had a decent look in then he would have made the centre back position his own as every time I saw him play, he always played quite a decent game so not sure if I am glad he is leaving or gutted. It`s one of them.

Tuesday 4th June 2009

Mark has signed a 12 month contract with a clause in it, which states that if after 4 months he has not done enough then Wrexham can tear up his contract and send Mark on his way.

Tuesday 19th May 2009

Levi Macken & Shaun Walley have both been released by Wrexham manager Dean Saunders. Both of them spent most of last season on loan at York City and Southport respectively but have been told they are no longer required at Wrexham. I am glad to see them both go as I thought both of them were uselesss footballers and have been very fortunate to be given a chance to play football for a living. If I was them I suggest they start looking for a proper job because they never going to make a decent living out of football as they are not good enough.

14th May 2009

Nathan Fairhurst joins Wrexham full time.

MIDFIELD player Nathan Fairhurst believes he has made the right choice by joining Wrexham, rather than staying with Championship club Preston North End.

The 19-year-old says the opportunity to play regular first team football with the Dragons is a better option rather than sit on the bench or play reserve team football at Preston where he was offered a new contract. I wish Nathan all the best and am sure that if he has a successful season then there will be a host of clubs trying to get his signature as he is too good to be playing non league football for more than a season.

Tuesday 5th May 2009

Jefferson Louis has left Wrexham by mutual consent with a year still left on his contract. The laziest footballer I have ever had the misfortune to watch play for Wrexham

Wednesday 29th April 2009

Gavin Ward - Keeper near the end of his career who served us well for 2 years.

Christian Gyan - The only match I seen him play, he was subbed at half time as he was shocking.

Anthony Williams - People claim he kept Wrexham in the league the season they beat Boston on the last day but he played about 12 games after coming in on loan and he was very lucky as all the shots in those 12 games came at a decent height and mae him look a better keeper than he was. Useless and good riddance.

Chris Marriott - Never saw him play.

Simon Spender - The promise he had as a youngster was never seen and was not good enough for Wrexham. Only reason he got a run in the team because Brian Little and Brian Carey don`t have a clue about playing football the proper way and thought he was the answer to someone with a bit of skill taking on players.

Wrexham manager Dean Saunders yesterday strengthened his promotion-chasing squad by signing winger Jamie McCluskey and he is actively pursuing yet more targets to keep his players fresh for the final 10 weeks of the season.

Saunders said new boy McCluskey faced a battle for selection, but predicted he would quickly become a crowd-pleaser at the Racecourse.

"Jamie has joined us until the end of the season and if he does well we will give him a new deal next season.

"He has not played for a long time but the fans will love watching him. He is a very talented young player, but his first job is to force his way into the team. Once he has done that I’m sure he will become a crowd favourite."

McCluskey, at one time the youngest ever player to feature in the Scottish Premier League when at Hibernian, hopes his move to the Racecourse will finally launch a career blighted by injury. A twice-broken foot was at the root of the problem, but the 21-year old Scot is optimistic that the worst is behind him.

"I have only been here a week and a half and I’ve only trained with the other lads for three days," he said.

"This is a big opportunity for me to get back to playing regular football and I owe that to the manager and his staff who have all been great with me. I have been to Partizan Belgrade in Serbia and Catania in Italy, but I have not played for a year.

"Wrexham are obviously doing well, but I would not have signed for them unless I felt I had something to offer and I’ll be doing my best to break into the first team as quickly as possible."

17th February Andrew Crofts signs on as a Wrexham player Andrew Crofts

Wrexham FC sign Andrew Crofts

DEAN SAUNDERS has lured Wales star Andrew Crofts to the Racecourse – but the midfielder couldn’t prevent Wrexham slipping to a 2-1 defeat at Burton Albion last night.

Crofts, who has 12 international caps, made his debut in the Pirelli Stadium loss after completing a whirlwind loan switch from League Two side Gillingham hours before the game.

The signing provided Saunders some consolation after watching his side throw away a 1-0 advantage against the league leaders, with Jefferson Louis opening the scoring on 23 minutes.

And the manager believes Crofts has a glittering career ahead of him, having watched the midfielder at close quarters while on international duty with Wales.

In dispute with his club Gillingham, where his contract expires at the end of the season, the 24-year old has joined the Dragons until the end of the season in order to play regular first team football.

And the Racecourse boss is delighted to have secured the player’s services for Wrexham’s bid to bounce back into the Football League at the first attempt.

“He’s coming to help us in this final push for promotion,” said Saunders.

“I know his qualities from working with him at Wales and this boy could end up playing in the Premiership. He played against Holland last summer, where he made a good impression on the coaching staff.

“This is a major coup for us and shows the ambition of the chairman and myself in trying get Wrexham promoted out of this league.

“Andrew’s presence brings experience and strength to the squad and he will bring the best out of our younger players. He is a good, solid character and certainly no fancy-dan player because he rolls his sleeves up and gets stuck in.

“Andrew will definitely move onto better things. But it shows the boy’s character that he is will to come and help a Welsh club in the short term. He really is doing us a big favour.

“Both John Toshack and myself advised the player that a move to Wrexham would be a big help to both him and Welsh football.”

Crofts has also won under 19 and under 21 honours and was Gillingham’s player of the year last season. He made nearly 200 appearances for the Kent club, scoring 17 goals.

Obviously Mark hughes must rate him highly to bring him to Man City from Blackburn seeing as Man City already have two excellent goalkeepers. At last we have some real height in our defence which is what we desperately required. I have now lost count of the number of players we have signed permanently or got on loan in the last two years. Surely we must be talking over 50 players. Geoff Moss surely must be congratulated on the money he has spent since taking over at Wrexham or sent to the nearest mental institution and strapped to the chair for his own well being and mental health because let`s face it, who else would have ploughed the amount of money into Wrexham during the last year or so. We must have had more players than Pamela Anderson has had ,well you know what she has had.
