Wrexham sign England youth star

Curtis Obeng has played for England at under-19 level Wrexham have signed England youth international Curtis Obeng following his release from Manchester City. The 20-year-old right-back had been on trial at Premier League side Wigan Athletic this summer before signing a two-year deal at the Racecourse. Obeng made his Wrexham debut in their 3-1 pre-season friendly defeat by Huddersfield Town on Saturday. "I did fear he might be offered a a deal by one of the bigger boys," said Wrexham boss Dean Saunders. Obeng, a graduate of the renowned Manchester City youth academy, has followed Poland youth international Adrian Cieslewicz from Mark Hughes' big-spending club to the Blue Square Premier club this summer. He also joins fellow summer signings French midfielder Hedi Taboubi and defender Mansour Assoumani at Wrexham. 606: DEBATE I see this as great news and Dean Saunders is certainly attracting some good players to Wrexham Shredsmoldroader2 Obeng told Wrexham's official website: "Wrexham is a big club even though it is low down the divisions at the moment. Wrexham conceded a goal in the first couple of minutes against Huddersfield but then after the shock of that early goal Wrexham got themselves back into the game and were on top for a lot of the 1st half and thoroughly deserved their equaliser which came from a good build up with a deft flick from the superb Mark Jones playing in the centre of midfield and then some great play from our polish centre forward who looks a quality player and I expect him to terrorise most of the defences this season, a bit like the way that Carlos Edwards used to do a few years ago. This lad can be as good as Carlos as he has the quality but what he lacks at the moment is a goalscoring touch and once he finds that then watch him go.

Wrexham have certainly got their hands full tomorrow with Huddersfield saigning as many palyers as Wrexham have lately except the difference is that the players Huddersfield have signed have cost money whereas all ours are freebies, rejects etc. but having said that I honestly believe it is the best squad we have had since Brian Little took over a couple of years ago and decided to replace the entire first team with a team of absolutely hopeless football players ( supposedly so football players I should have said ) who managed to play the worst football I have seen at The Racecourse in the last 30 years since I started going to watch them.

The hosts took the lead in the first minute, Chris Lane scoring from the spot before Taylor struck twice.
A Wes Baynes free kick and Paul Ennis' deflected shot put Dean Saunders' Wrexham 4-2 up.
Simon Brown grabbed the fifth with a curling effort before Karl Noone reduced the deficit for Vauxhall who got a third after a defensive error.

Referee: Mike Jones who was also the man in the middle against Preston last Tuesday night.

A very unfamiliar looking Man City side sent to the racecourse gave Wrexham a very very physical so-called friendly where it could quite easily have ended up 8-a-side with some of the tackles that were flying in from both sides.

City took the lead when they were awarded a controversial penalty after the Wrexham keeper Chris Maxwell was adjudged to have brought down the city striker in the penalty box when he dived for the ball and the city player went over and was awarded the penalty with Maxwell pleading his innonence to the ref with no success. The penalty was put to the keepers right and low to make it 1-0 to City.

Wes Baynes comes on at half time for Wrexham and when Wrexham were awarded a free kick a minute into the 2nd half up stepped Baynes to leather it home into the top corner with what I think was his first touch, the same player who came on as sub against Preston the other night with less than a minute to go and didn`t touch the ball. What a goal, you will not see a better free kick this coming season. The game was starting to get a bit tasty now and the tackles were flying everywhere but the ref conscious that it was a friendly (at least it should have been) didn`t book anyone.

Wrexham`s 2nd goal was a replica of the one Mani scored last Tuesday when Spann went flying down the wing and sent in a cross that Mani headed home to make it 2-1 to Wrexham.

The City no.11 then said something to the crowd in the Mold Road Stand and the crowd reacted and booed him every time he got the ball, he still kept saying something which incensed the crowd and then was switched wings before it got nasty.

It was nice to see Jamie McCluskey make an appearance as sub but this performance was not as good as the performance against Preston the other night but then again we still have a lot of players who have yet to feature, like the two new signings the other day. We have got a lot of quality players who have hardly featured due to injuries and I don`t think that Saunders still knows his best starting eleven.

Matthew Wolfenden Signs for Wrexham

The striker made 47 appearances for the Latics including 10 starts and scored two goals, although he struggled throughout the last two years with niggling injuries which hampered his breakthrough.

Wrexham held a very strong Preston North End side to a 1-1 draw at The Racecourse in front of a very low crowd. Official attendance was just over 1,100 but it was more like 1, 900 as Preston brought around 200 odd fans and in the yale stand there was easily 800-900 people in the top and bottom tier combined whilst the Mold Road Stand must have easily had 1,000 fans plus so how they get these figures is beyond me. Maybe it`s understandable the low crowd with the prices they were charging to get in on the night which were £10 Adults, £7 for a brand new category started this season and that is 16 - 21 year olds and £5 for under 16`s.

Anyway onto the match and Preston started the brighter of the two teams and were soon passsing the ball around the pitch and had a spell of about 2 minutes where Wrexham couldn`t get anywhere near the ball but the impressive Hedi Taboubi intercepted the ball and Wrexham broke forward and got a corner, from the corner nothing much happened but then the ball was swung back in and the very very impressive Mansur Assoumani powered home a header past Nicky Weaver (ex Man City ) making his debut for Preston after only signing on today.

Preston had a good chance when their striker who was shooting towards the empty kop in the 1st half dragged his shot and oit went just past the far post. Half Time came with the reds leading 1-0 and they thoroughly deserved the ovation they received as they went in for refreshments.

The only down side was Marc Williams went off injured even though not many people knew at the time as he just walked off the pitch and straight down the tunnel but I was told after the match that it was more a cautionary measure as many people feared he had broken his foot again.

2nd half and Wrexham make one change while Preston made several including taking off the ex-Liverpool hitman Neil Mellor who I didn`t notice in the 1st half. Jon Parkin came on and what a huge huge guy he is and we could definitely could with a tall player or two in our ranks as during the 1st half we did not win one ball from the keeper`s kicks apart from the one he mis-kicked. Chris Maxwell kept hitting the ball straight to Mark Jones who is not known for his heading ability and never will be , so why Maxwell kept aiming for him I will never know.

2nd Half and the Preston players didn`t like losing and resorted to some shocking tackles which the ref and linesman continually letting them get away with it, foul after foul, several handballs and they were getting away with it because the ref didn`t want to book any players with it being a friendly but the Preston players took advantage and overstepped the mark which made it very awkward for the ref but then the crowd then started to turn on the ref who was doing himself no favours whatsoever and he had to respond somehow but the response we got was hardly one you would normally see a referee do, as he pushed one of the Preston players after the Preston player had pushed the ref first. Touch the ref and it`s a instant red card, but the ref just pushed him back which was really quite funny and it would be great if more referee`s did that, maybe some players would think twice especially if the ref was a big lad. Would you hit him?

WOULD supporters attending Tuesday evening's friendly with Preston North End please note that the Eric Roberts Stand will be closed for this game and our remaining pre-season fixtures.

The cost of opening this section of the ground against Coventry City, with stewards, turnstilemen and catering staff required, virtually outweighed the receipts we took from fans using the stand.

It will be open again for our first BSP match of the season on Saturday 8 August, when Eastbourne Borough are the visitors.

and just as you would expect from Wrexham Council they go and start digging all the roads up around the Js Sainsbury`s roundabout just in time for the football season. What else would you expect from the people who put these sleeping policemen up on really dangerous bends, I mean has anyone drove down the back lanes towards The Plassey, because if you have then you will know what I mean. What bloody idiot decided on putting a sleeping policeman, ( at least that`s what I think they are called ) where you have to drive right up to it , then put your foot down and veer across towards the other side of the road and then immediately onto the right side because it is on a blind corner and there are hundreds more in the Wrexham County area. Mad and that`s all I have to say on this matter.

Roadworks Start On Plas Coch Interchange

SUPPORTERS are reminded that they face delays travelling to the Racecourse from this Monday onwards, when the north bridge of the busy Plas Coch Interchange A451/A483 will be closed and a contraflow management system begins operating.

This will mean traffic will not be able to:

- Access the town directly from the A483 northbound carriageway (from Oswestry/Chirk).

- Access the A483 southbound carriageway directly from A541 Gwersyllt direction.

- Access the A483 northbound carriageway (to Chester) directly from A541 Wrexham town centre.

A 20mph speed restriction will also apply through the works, and Summerhill Road will be one-way towards Summerhill.

Various timescales have been printed locally, but it looks as if the work should be completed by the end of August 2009.

Please do give yourself extra time when heading to games.

Christian Smith played this match even though I thought we had got rid of him. What the hell is going on, he slags the club off and then Saunders brings him back. Don`t get it for one second. A shocking decision for him to play for Wrexham Fc. Get rid of him now,once and for all. He is useless and I don`t see what extra qualities he brings to the team. Oh , he doesn`t does he!

FRENCH midfielder Hedi Taboubi improved his chances of earning a contract at Wrexham after impressing boss Dean Saunders last night.
The trialist played 90 minutes at Welsh Premier Prestatyn Town, who were well worth the goalless draw, but Saunders was more interested in performances than results.
“Taboubi was head and shoulders above everyone on the pitch,” said Saunders. “And if I’ve learned anything tonight it is that he deserves another chance against Colwyn Bay on Wednesday.
“He was trying a bit too hard to impress, which is understandable to some extent and the people who were receiving the ball from him didn’t do as well as they might have.
“But when you are on trial it’s difficult and he was trying some impossible things.”
Saunders revealed that England C international Andy Fleming also passed an important test.
“I wanted Fleming to play alongside the French lad to see how they would get on and he did well too,” added the Dragons boss.
“He was not allowed to pass the ball backwards tonight on my instructions and that was a little test for him which he passed, with the exception of one pass.
“But it was a tough game for us and it would be good if our reserve team was allowed to play in the Welsh Premier. This is what these games are all about, to see what players can do and make some decisions on them.”
Of Wrexham’s starting line-up at Bastion Road, only goalkeeper Chris Maxwell, Fleming and striker Obi Anoruo had played first team football last season, the remainder of the side made up of youth players and trialists.
And Taboubi was never far from the action, constantly making himself available to receive the ball even if his distribution – particularly when trying to spread play to the flanks – was somewhat ambitious.
There was an early scare for the hosts when Steve Abbot met a free kick from Joaquin Midenilla Cabotti, steering a header beyond goalkeeper Jon Dunt but fractionally too high. Wrexham again went close from a set piece, Taboubi curling a free kick just over.
But such goalmouth incidents were few and far between, thanks in no small measure to the hard work and rugged determination of the Seasiders.
And Prestatyn went closest to breaking the deadlock on 23 minutes when Mike Parker’s cross was met by Andy Moran, whose first-time shot flew straight at Chris Maxwell.
Among five Wrexham changes for the second half, Polish trialists Bart Fogler, a goalkeeper, and defender Marek Lendzion were thrown in, less than 24 hours after arriving in North Wales.
But it was another substitute, the more familiar Christian Smith who tested Dunt with a sharp effort from outside the penalty area in the 50th minute as the Dragons tried to up the pace, without much success.
And the subsequent departure of Fleming – the Dragons’ best player – and Abbott, replaced by youngsters Jamie Morton and Matty Hurdman, merely added to the piecemeal nature of the action with the home side also making several changes.
As the pace of the game showed signs of taking its toll on Prestatyn, Lendzion broke down the right to deliver a teasing cross that was hacked away and Jamie Morton forced a fine save from Ian Griffiths with a shot from 30 yards.
Morton, still only 15, then unlocked the home defence with a superb pass to pick out Lendzion, but the adventurous defender was forced wide by the excellent Dave Hayes and the chance was gone.
And another opportunity was squandered when Johnny Hunt raced down the left and pulled the ball back to Hurdman, who made a total hash of his shot.
It might have been even more embarrassing had Jamie Duffy at the other end beat Fogler, who had been a virtual spectator for the second period, but was well-placed to gather the substitute’s scrappy effort and then saved Wrexham’s blushes with a fine stop from Russ Jones.

The match will be played at their Bastion Road ground on Monday, 13 July - kick off: 7.00pm.

Admission prices will be £6.00 adults, £3.00 children and concessions.

Due to the short timescale involved Prestatyn will not be able to produce a full programme, but there will be a teamsheet available at the turnstiles.

WREXHAM FC are to play Prestatyn Town in a friendly at Bastion Road on Monday night (July 13, kick-off 7pm) after Bangor City pulled out.

Dean Saunders' Wrexham FC side had originally been scheduled to play Welshpool Town, but Bangor City stepped in after the mid Wales side pulled out.

However, Nev Powell's side have now pulled out of the fixture so Prestatyn will provide the oppostition.


Wrexham will be taking a look at two polish trialists as well during the course of this coming week and they could very well feature against Prestatyn on Monday night.
